Natural gas production out performs coal seams

During 2014, and for the first time ever, the amount of gas Consol Energy produced from the Marcellus and Utica shales surpassed the amount it extracted from coal seams, which have been the company’s main source of gas for a long time.

According to Consol, the Marcellus and Utica shales production accounted for 54 percent of the 235.7 equivalent cubic feet of natural gas the company produced in 2014. Consol’s Marcellus shale production almost doubled during 2014 and increased 93 percent past 2013. Gas obtained from coalbeds only accounted for 34 percent.

Kate O’Donovan, Consol spokesperson, explained how the two shales have continued to be a “growth engine for the company:”
