Area municipalities such as Watsontown that purchase power wholesale to resell to residents will enjoy lower rates in the coming years, according to projections.
The expected decrease is due mainly to the increasing amount of power produced by natural gas from the Marcellus Shale.
Watsontown Borough Councilman Harry Hefty told council Monday night the American Municipal Power Inc.-Ohio, the power company from which the borough and a couple of other area municipalities purchase their power, has projected the rates the borough pays will fluctuate but generally decrease in the coming years.
“Our annual power rates are expected to go down in the next five years,” Hefty said.
